West Jefferson fall colors

Checked October 4, 2026.

Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway page on the National Park Service site, last updated July 26, 2021, says the majority of trees typically change color during October, starting early in the month on the highest peaks and progressing down into the lower elevations. Exact peak dates at specific Parkway locations are impossible to predict in advance.

The National Park Service FAQ, last updated October 30, 2024, says typically, fall colors develop during mid to late October.

Higher elevations change first, from those National Park Service pages.

Appalachian State’s map page says its map assumes about one week earlier per 1,000 feet, and the author calls that assumption a guess. That is the author’s guess, not a fact.

Overlooks

Mount Jefferson State Natural Area: vistas as far as Tennessee from its overlooks and Luther Rock. The gallery labels one image Jefferson Overlook. The park page says the summit is 4,465 feet.

The October 4, 2025 Appalachian State foliage report, a 2025 status note and not a standing rule, describes two overlooks right on the road and Luther Rock at the end of the Rhododendron Trail.

The Blue Ridge Parkway Association says Jefferson is seen from the overlook between mileposts 266 and 267. The overlook is not given another name.
