Hiking near West Jefferson, NC

Mount Jefferson State Natural Area is the hike above town. The park page lists hiking (5 miles) and picnicking, and it names Luther Rock among the overlooks. Use the park’s map to choose a walk. This page does not list a length for any single trail.

Mount Jefferson State Natural Area

The address on the park page is 1481 Mount Jefferson State Park Road, West Jefferson, NC 28694. The park is open 8 a.m. to sunset year-round and is closed on Christmas Day. Day use has no fee. There is a picnic shelter and no camping. The same page says the closest state park with camping is New River State Park, and that the summit is 4,465 feet above sea level.

The West Jefferson guide already says the trailheads are at the top of Mount Jefferson State Park Road, a short drive from downtown, and that there is no marked trail from Main Street to the summit. It also names Elk Knob State Park. This page does not add a drive time or a trail length for Elk Knob.

Dogs on the park trails

The park page says pets are allowed, are not permitted inside buildings, and must be on an attended leash no longer than 6 feet. Each High Peak cabin allows one well-behaved dog for $75 per stay. See dog-friendly West Jefferson and dog-friendly cabins.
